When I read your blogs, I feel as if we've talked in person. And it's doubly nice to IM or e-mail regularly with a number of you. So, when I tell Marv about my day, I often find myself saying, "I was talking with my online friend today...." or "My online friend said...." Why do I differentiate between online friends and offline friends?

There are so many different ways to categorize friends:

  • Online or Offline

  • Married or Single

  • Parent or Child-Free

  • Classmate or Random

  • Meat-Eating or Vegetarian

  • Glasses-Wearing, Contacts-Wearing, or Free-From-Wearing

  • Type A or B

  • Dyed or Au Naturel Hair

  • And the classifications can go on and on and on....

In the end, you're all my friends. It doesn't matter if I've never met you face-to-face or if we've had completely different life experiences. Each of you contribute something to my life that no one else can. You are a friend indeed.
  • I feel the same way about you, sweetie

    ;)

By the way, does your name mean "thank you" in Mandarin? Because I always find myself saying it after reading one of your posts.
    • My name is actually very strange even in Chinese. Technically, it means a person with a lot of free time, but I prefer to think of it as a woman of leisure. :D
  • i'm glad to know an online friend like you :)
  • Awwww. :)
  • aw sweet. you missed out my category "mental" heh
  • Lovely. I'm glad to have befriended you :)
  • Hmm. I tend to differentiate as well, perhaps only because I tend to describe people when I am talking about them, and I will say if they are married or where I met them, so if I haven't met them, it is appropriate to say that it is someone from LJ or elsewhere online. And it gives the person to whom I am speaking a more rounded out idea of what I am describing.
    • That's true. Hopefully people don't use very negative adjectives to describe me when they talk about me. ;)
  • Mary Englebreit is a talented lady. I worked in a chocolate shop a loooong time ago, and they carried tins and baskets and things for making up gift baskets. The Mary tins were a lot of fun :)

I consider online friends as friends also. There are many ways to define "friend" and all sorts of friends to have. I think one of the best things about the internet is that it's made it possible for me to meet people and become friends, whom I otherwise would never have known.

It makes my life (and hopefully theirs/yours) richer.
  • *HUGS* I love all my friends - online or offline, married, single... because if you're my friend, then you must ROCK!

    And you do. Totally. :)
  • David is kind of suspicious of people I meet online. Which is odd, considering he met me online and look how that turned out :)
    • How interesting! I think I'm with David. I wonder about Marv's online soccer buddies sometimes. But I think I wonder about most soccer hooligans. hehe
  • awww so sweet. thank you! :)
  • I do the same! However, since my parents don't know I have this, that is one place I don't categorise (online or offline)! There was a time when I would hesitate, "This friend..." but now it's with no hesitation!

But I don't consider all people on my LJ Friends list a friend... some I just read and don't interact much with or share my details with... you should already know, you however are in the "friends" category! :)

Good to have friended you! :)
    • I use the term "friend" loosely here but it's true that even with blogs where I have very little contact with the person writing it, I often feel as if they've "spoken" to me. Perhaps I need my head examined. ;)

Thanks for putting me in the "friends" category!
  • u have always been a surprise friend I make online , what else can i say more ?

Awww... I'm touched. Thank you for sharing your sweet sentiment--it is reciprocated, indeed. :)

  • I find myself talking about my online friends a lot. Sometimes I feel like other people hear that as "imaginary friends." ;)
    • Either imaginary friends or psycho friends. :P I'm sure many people still think those of us who have a social life online have something wrong with us. I talk about you guys A LOT.
  • Awww, how sweet!!! :)
